Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said only that the fallen firefighter was a 27-year department veteran.

The blaze at 300 W. Indiana Ave. in Fairhill — which apparently was occupied by a pizzeria — broke out just before 2 a.m. While the fire had been extinguished, the building collapsed about 90 minutes later, Murphy said.

Four other firefighters and a Licensing and Inspections Department inspector were pulled from the rubble and treated at Temple University Hospital, Murphy said.
